Gandhi (the film) – key scenes

1. The first key scene for me,personally,is in the beginning of the film when Gandhi is killed.

It shows the importance of the protagonist and his influence concerning his envoronment.

For the viewer,the scene gives a hint and creates another point of watching and concentration on details.

2. The second key scene is Gandhi’s arrival in Bombay. He is celebrated like a hero but doesn’t act this way.To him, India seems alien because he got used to the Western culture and its standards and problems.So,he tries to transmitt the solutions to India to improve the general situations and unite all religions in the end.

3. The third and last key scene for me seems to be the fast.

With his fast and behaviour,the people get the impression that Gandhi is like a martyr and not afraid to die or to give up is life to improve the situation,getting worse everyday.

What attitude towards abortion comes across in this section ,and what does it say about Indian society?

In general,Maji is seen as a spiritual,lovely women with higher power.But she is the one who gives the advice to the first Person narrator to have an abortion. This is completly the opposite to what she pretends to be. But as she says, it’s the only way to safe people from dishonour. So it’s kind of charity to give this advice to young women.

To me,it also shows that the Inidian society isn’t as spiritual as she acts. They have problems other cultures have as well but they try to cover it up. But it’s dishonest and quite reprehensible. On the other hand you have to mention that the Indian society has got big financial problems and with an abortion you can safe a soul. But then it’s more and more important to do medical help and to find out a soulution for not getting pregnant.

“Being in favour of a barbaric ritual like the suttee reveals Olivia to be unreasonable, naive and disloyal. Her infatuation with the Indian culture makes her ignore that oppression, barbarism and cruelty are rife in this country.”

I think that everyone has got an individual opinion about that. Olivia,personally,thinks that it’s okay to act this way because she couldn’t imagine a life without the person she loves most in the world.For her,there would probably be no reason to be alive any more….no strength to go on.

But in general, I think there is always a reason to go on even if it hurts deeply. To comment on the ritual,I have just cruel feelings about that because it’s just barbarism and not acceptable at all.
